A trio had to be rescued after their boat got stuck in the mud on the River Medway.

Police, firefighters, the coastguard and the ambulance service attended the incident off Lapwing Drive, near Lower Halstow.

Firefighters and members of the Sheppey Coastguard Team carried out the rescue last night.

A spokesman for Kent Fire and Rescue Service said: "Five fire engines were sent to the scene off Lapwing Drive, including the water safety unit, and crews worked with the H.M Coastguard to bring the trio safely back onto dry land using mud rescue equipment. The men were passed into the care of SECAmb."

The Sheppey Coastguard Team said they were called out at 8.25pm and stood down at 1am.

They said: "When on scene a plan was made and two of Sheppey Team and two fire officers deployed and working as one team to rescue the three casualties off the mud.

"Four rescuers went out on the mud but the rescue could not have been done without all the rest of the team on land working together."

A spokesman for the South East Coast Ambulance Service said: "We were called to reports of this incident at approximately 8.45pm. Our Hazardous Area Response Team attended the scene.

"The three men were checked over at the scene after being rescued but didn’t require further hospital treatment."

A spokesman for police said: "Kent Police was called at around 8.30pm on Monday 10 August regarding a report that three men in a boat had becoming stuck in mud on the River Medway near Lower Halstow.

"Officers attended the scene where they assisted the Kent Fire and Rescue Service. H.M. Coastguard and South East Coast Ambulance Service also attended."
