Police are hunting burglars after a spate of night-time break-ins left residents terrified.

Neighbours say at least four properties were targeted in Shurland Avenue, Sittingbourne, after midnight on Tuesday.

One home owner, who did not want to be named, said: "Burglars tried to get into four houses while people were sleeping. They all happened after midnight. Police have told residents they think the road was chosen in advance."

She added: "I know a dog disturbed one of them in one house. Obviously, everyone has been left very frightened."

Another warned on social media: "Beware, make sure you keep all doors locked. Scumbags got into my house last night. Luckily not much was taken."

Shurland Avenue is off Norwood Drive and near Fulston Manor School. It consists of mainly modern semi-detached houses and bungalows.

Police said they were investigating the break-ins but said they had only received reports of two burglaries in the road.

Spokesman James Walker said: "We are investigating a report that two properties in Shurland Avenue, Sittingbourne, were burgled on the night of Tuesday February 16 and Wednesday February 17."

He said a wallet and electrical equipment was taken from one house but added: "At present, no items are reported to have been taken from the other."

He said officers had visited the road and spoken to a number of potential witnesses during door-to-door inquiries.

Police were also appealing for privately-held CCTV or door bell footage which might have captured the thieves at work.
