More roadworks have started in Sittingbourne after being delayed by two weeks.

Work in St Michael’s Road, to give it a new layout, was due to start on July 31.

But instead it began today, with the road being partially shut to traffic which is now being diverted via a bus lane by The Forum Shopping Centre.

The roundabout outside the railway station will be replaced with traffic lights.

This is one of the first major steps towards making way for the eight-screen cinema and restaurant complex.

But it’s not yet been named by developers.

As we reported last week, it was thought the name had been revealed in a licencing application by Pizza Express, one of the names due to open in the town, as ‘Spring Square’.

A spokesman from the Spirit of Sittingbourne said they had not decided what to call it and the name was just a placeholder.

We asked what you thought it should be called and received many suggestions.

Keith Nevols, who stood in the last parliamentary election for the Liberal Democrats, said: “I think it’s an opportunity to recognise two great Sittingbournians and so I suggest ‘Morgandale Square’ or ‘Peterdale Square’ in honour of Peter Morgan – six decades of service including founding the history museum and the CAB and teaching three generations of locals, and Dale Howting our own ‘whistling postman’ who has raised enormous amounts for charity.

“And, once the cinema is open, I hope we see Dale on his bike outside.”

Other suggestions include ‘The Bourne Identity’ which came in from Jennifer Moore.
