A school was forced to lockdown earlier today after concerns for pupil's safety.

The Sittingbourne School in Swanstree Avenue took the action after reports a stranger was sited on its premises.

In total, the school was locked down for 20 minutes from 11.15am to 11.35am as staff carried out safety checks.

As speculation and concern online grew, head teacher Nick Smith emailed parents following the incident.

He said: "At approximately 11.15am today, I made the decision to place the school on an internal lockdown in order to allow us to carry out necessary checks following a report of a stranger on site.

"Extensive checks were carried out of the entire school site and no unauthorised visitors were found to be on the school premises. Consequently, at 11.35am the lockdown was released.

"All students have been reassured that they are safe in school and usual school business has resumed."

Speaking to the Sittingbourne News, Mr Smith said: "The concern was raised by a member of staff having observed three people enter via a vehicle gate who they did not recognise.

"To be safe, whilst we checked the site and CCTV, students and staff were instructed to remain in class and follow lockdown procedures. Once we were satisfied it was a false alarm, the lockdown was lifted.

"We have already reviewed our process to help minimise the chance of a repeat."
