A “complex recovery operation” was underway after a lorry overturned on a motorway sliproad, causing lengthy queues for drivers.

The M2 coast-bound exit at the Stockbury roundabout between Sittingbourne and Maidstone was closed following the accident at about 6.30am.

National Highways confirmed the road had reopened by 3.25pm.

Traffic was very slow moving in the area with queues building as far back as the A249 Key Street roundabout.

There was also slow-moving traffic at the Junction 6 exit sliproad on the M2.

National Highways said the recovery operation was likely to be ongoing throughout the morning but at 1.11pm it was still in progress.

One motorist, who was heading towards Stockbury from Sittingbourne, said: "The lorry was hanging over the side of the slip road - looks like it had taken the curve too fast and lost control.

“There wasn't much congestion on the A249. Once I got onto the M2 I could see loads of Highways England vehicles blocking the exit."

Drivers are being advised to allow extra time if travelling in the area as there are around 15-minute delays on the approach.

Police were at the scene after being called at 6.21am. A spokesman said: “Officers and paramedics attended and the driver was taken to a local hospital as a precaution.

“Highways officers also attended and are arranging for recovery of the vehicle.”
