A teenager who died after being knocked off his bicycle by a car died from a head injury, an inquest has heard.

Cavan Scott, of Ufton Lane, Sittingbourne, was reportedly hit by a black VW Polo in Lower Road, Teynham, in the early hours of Bank Holiday Monday.

The 19-year-old, who has been described as a "caring, handsome and funny" teen, died from his injuries.

An inquest opening at County Hall in Maidstone today(Monday) heard how the car was driving along the road from Sittingbourne to Teynham when the collision happened.

The inquest heard how the teenager was identified by police at the scene after being hit by a car on the unlit road.

Coroner Katrina Hepburn explained Mr Scott's cause of death was given as a head injury.

Paying tribute to her son, mum Diana Stratton, said: "Cavan was a very much loved and special son, step-son, grandson, brother, nephew and cousin. He was absolutely loved by everyone.

"Every time Cavan left the house, he would always tell me and his step-dad that he loves us. I am never ever going to hear those words or ever see him again and that breaks my heart.

"As soon as Cavan met somebody new, they would remember and describe him as a shy and quiet boy but once they got to know Cavan they would then go on to describing him as a funny and loving boy who would do anything for anybody and give you anything he had."

The inquest was suspended pending an ongoing criminal investigation by police.

Five people were arrested following the crash and have all been bailed until the end of May.

They are a 17-year-old girl from Canterbury, a 20-year-old woman from Chatham, an 18-year-old man from Faversham, and two men aged 19 and 20 from Sheerness.

Police are appealing for witnesses, and particularly the driver of a light-coloured vehicle seen in the area between 1am and 1.15am, to come forward.
