An underweight puppy with a suspected "wormy belly" has been discovered roaming a field.

Swale council's stray dog service picked up the poorly canine near Spade Lane in Hartlip last night.

The female "Terrier type" puppy was initially thought to be roughly five weeks old.

A picture of the pooch was posted last night on the service's Facebook page saying that she wasn't chipped, however this is "most likely down to age".

They added that she was "quite smelly and looks to have a wormy belly", as well as appealing for anyone who recognises her to come forward with proof of ownership.

One person said: "Bless, looks terrified."

Another added: "Not another one found in that area again. Poor little thing but at least she is safe now."

This morning the service updated worried dog-lovers with new pictures and information on the pup.

"Little dumpling would like to say good morning everyone," they said.

"She's had a good night's rest, a yummy breakfast and lots of fuss. Who could resist that little face?

"She's now been wormed and though it'll make her feel 100 times better, none of us are looking forward to cleaning up the aftermath!

"We do believe she's older than first thought and could be closer to 12 weeks rather than five.

"Aging is never an exact science and as she's underweight, she's small for her age."

Officers are also monitoring the Terrier closely for any signs of parvovirus – a highly infectious illness that is spread through direct contact with a dog or by contact with contaminated objects.

It can be more dangerous for unvaccinated dogs and puppies less than six months old.
