Commuters suffered a miserable journey into work this morning after several incidents led to major delays.

A crash near the Sheppey Crossing heading on to the island left traffic tailing back and in the opposite direction broken down vehicles caused problems.

Police were called at 6.44am after reports of a car crashing just after the bridge on the A249 crossing at Iwade.

A slip road had to be closed while emergency services dealt with the incident, but has since reopened.

Officers, paramedics and firefighters attended the scene to help a man who was treated for minor injuries, police said. He was taken to hospital for extra treatment.

At the same time, traffic built on the A249 between Sittingbourne and Maidstone.

Delays of up to an hour were reported after two vehicles broke down on the stretch from the Detling turn off and the M20 and also towards the Hucking turn off.

Congestion had cleared by 9am.
