Tributes have been paid to a head teacher described as "a kind, caring, wonderful person" following her death.

David Whitehead, chief executive of Our Community Multi Academy Trust, says the entire school community has been left "utterly devastated" by her death.

"Although we knew that Katherine had been seriously unwell, it has not cushioned the shock and sadness we feel at the loss of our dear friend and colleague," he said.

"Katherine dealt with her illness with a tenacious, practical and strong attitude throughout her treatment. In living with her diagnosis, she continued to successfully lead Milstead and Frinsted CE Primary school, always putting the children and school community before her own needs.

"We will remember her as not only an amazing head teacher, but most importantly as a kind, caring, wonderful person. As a Trust, we will also be forever extremely proud and grateful for her considerable achievement in making Milstead Church of England Primary School the successful school it is today."

Mr Whitehead says the school will work with Mrs Baker's family and friends to ensure that there is a fitting memorial to her at the school.

"I want to develop in our children a love of learning through discovery and experience..."

A GoFundMe page has been set up with a target of £1,200 to pay for a memorial bench within the school grounds, plant a 'Katherine' rose and present the school with an award shield bearing her name for future award ceremonies.

The target has already been exceeded, with £1,300 donated by well-wishers.

Donors to the fundraiser have left messages of praise for the teacher. Louise Pike said: "Mrs Baker was an inspirational teacher to both my son and daughter."

Heidi Vandepeer added: "Katherine was inspirational, brave and so strong throughout her battle. She never gave up and lived life to the full 'til the bitter end. She will be so dearly missed by so many."

Mrs Baker had been head for seven years, and wrote on the school website about her approach to teaching.

"I am passionate about nurturing children, both academically and spiritually, with the aim of providing them with secure foundations for life," she said.
