A borough councillor has been reported to police by Swale council over posts on social media suggesting people "blockade" a council meeting.

Cllr Mike Baldock, Ukip leader on Swale, put a message on Facebook this week in reaction to news the authority was planning to borrow £28 million to fund Sittingbourne town centre's regeneration.

Question marks have been raised about the prospect of the council taking on such a large debt to build a cinema, hotel, restaurants and new shops and the proposal is due to be discussed at a Cabinet meeting on Wednesday.

Asked what people could do about it, Cllr Baldock posted: "Blockade the Council meetings. Force them to abandon the Cabinet meeting through public opposition. This is what has stopped things going ahead in other Councils before."

But yesterday, Cllr Baldock received a letter from a senior council officer saying he may have committed a crime and the "most serious matter" had been reported to police.

It says he suggested people take "direct action" to "interrupt" or "postpone" a meeting and sought to "undermine the democratic process".

Cllr Baldock, who made headlines last month when he left a Kent County Council meeting over a potential unpaid council tax bill, said he was yet to hear from police.

He added: "I don't think I have done anything illegal. I do not believe I have committed a crime."

Meanwhile, Swale council has confirmed it intends to beef up security at next week's Cabinet meeting.
