Volunteers spent four days cleaning graffiti off a footbridge over the train tracks in Murston.

The work was done as was part of a community project, organised by staff at Sainsbury's in Sittingbourne.

Manager Rebekah Mason said: “We had a different team each day, about 24 volunteers all together.

"We cut down the overgrown bushes and trees around the bridge, cleaned, prepped and painted it - you wouldn’t believe how much hard work it’s been.”

The sides of the walkway have been painted brown and cream.

“The bridge was very run down, graffiti everywhere, dirty, weeds growing through,” Rebekah said.

“You can’t see the graffiti any more, it looks so much cleaner.”

The project was part of Sainsbury’s 150th birthday celebrations.

“They really encouraged us to do a community project,” Rebekah said.

“I got in contact with our local councillor James Hall to find a worthwhile project.

"We decided to clean up the bridge because it’s very well-used, it’s a common walkway into town and to the schools, so we thought we’d show it some attention and, hopefully, make a small, positive difference.”

She added: “We’d like to thank everyone who came and supported us.

"A special thanks goes to Brewers Decorator Centres in Mill Way for giving us the paint and lots of advice.”
