A motorist suffered life-threatening head injuries when his car struck a lamppost in a Kent town.

It happened at about 10am Monday on Staplehurst Road, Sittingbourne near the A249 roundabout close to Bobbing.

Speaking at the scene, PC Ian Malcolm from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: "The air ambulance landed on the Maidstone-bound carriageway of the A249 and then flew him to a London hospital.

"There was only one vehicle involved and he was the only person in the car.

"We are appealing for witnesses to come forward and they should ring 01622 798535 if they have any information."

The road was closed for about three hours after the crash while investigations were carried out.
