The Archbishop of Canterbury made a pilgrimage to the pub this week when he surprised drinkers in Sittingbourne.
The Most Rev Justin Welby was visiting the town to help the local deanery in its outreach work.
Starting his tour of Sittingbourne on Monday, Archbishop Welby attended a question-and-answer session at Borden Grammar before joining the Christian social group, The King’s Men, for a quick pint in the evening.
Owner of the Paper Mill Micropub, Harvey Melia, 25, said he was surprised the Church of England’s most powerful cleric chose his saloon style bar to unwind.
“It’s the first time we’ve ever had anyone of that prestige in the pub before.
“I was a little shocked when they asked if he could come but it really says a lot about us if people want to bring the Archbishop in.”
Archbishop Welby spoke with other customers, shared a joke with staff, and obliged those seeking photos with him.
Mr Melia said the archbishop seemed happy to give the pub his blessing but declined to join in a game of cribbage.
“I think he was enjoying himself. He was chatting to anyone who wanted to meet him.
“It was meant to be a quiet night but the pub got quite full in the end.
“He was very down to earth, and had a pint of Goacher's Crown Imperial Stout."
Mr Melia, who lives above the saloon in Charlotte Street, said it wasn’t faith which allowed the Archbishop to pay him a visit.
He added: “I’m not a church goer myself but I respect those that do, we accept everyone here.
“I’d like to think it was our friendly atmosphere that brought him here rather than divine intervention.”
