Fire crews have issued a warning on the use of batteries after a toy car went up in flames.
Footage shows the moment the toy became a fireball after its batteries got wet in the rain in the garden of a home in Hop Garden Crescent, in Newington, near Sittingbourne.
The fire service has warned people about the dangers posed by lithium-ion batteries.
Matt Deadman, assistant director for response at Kent Fire and Rescue Service said: “Lithium-ion batteries are found in many chargeable items, such as mobile phones, vapes, e-scooters and even toys, and they are usually safe – but if a lithium-ion battery is damaged or stored incorrectly, there’s a chance it could overheat, catch fire, or explode.
“Remember to protect batteries from damage, such as being crushed, punctured, or immersed in water, and if you suspect it’s not in good working order, then do not use it.”
Tips from the fire service include buying from a reputable retailer, referring to the manufacturer’s guidance on charging and storing and only charging appliances during the day when you are at home and awake.
It advises to protect batteries against being damaged, such as being crushed, punctured or immersed in water.
The toy in the garden burst into flames just before 8pm on July 25 and one fire engine attended.
The flames were out before it arrived and crews cooled the battery.
No injuries were reported.
