AN employee at Kent Science Park has reached a major milestone after making his 75th blood donation.

Bob Young, 54, was presented with a crystal plate in recognition of his services as a blood donor.

The National Blood Service estimates that each donation helps treat and save the lives of three adults, which means Mr Young has helped 225 people.

With each blood donation equalling 470ml, he has given nearly eight gallons (53 pints) of blood, making him among the top three per cent of donors in the country.

Mr Young works for Merit Solutions, the ICT company that develops specialist process and stock control systems for food manufacturers and retails.

He gave his first donation aged 18 in Cheddar, Somerset. For the last three years he has given blood at the donor sessions hosted by Kent Science Park, that are often attended by nearly 50 of the park’s 1,125 employees.

He said of his achievement: “I’m proud to have reached this milestone and I’ve kept going as I feel it’s the right thing to do.”

The park’s site director, James Speck, said: “With so many people on site, many of whom are involved in scientific advancement it is not surprising that a large number of employees are blood donors.

“Bob’s commitment is extraordinary and it is right he is recognised for such sterling service.”

Living in Dexter Close, Kennington, Ashford, Mr Young is a keen table tennis player and plays in both the Ashford and Canterbury leagues.
