TWO men posing as councillors conned a couple out of several hundred pounds of cash.
The men called at the home of a couple in their 50s in Sittingbourne.
They claimed they had received a complaint in relation to their fence. The men checked the garden and left. Some time later it was discovered that the cash had been stolen.
Police have issued a warning in conjunction with Swale Borough Council in a bid to alert residents about the bogus callers.
PC Warren Jarvis: "If you want to let someone in check their identification by closing the door and calling the company they say they are from.
"If the caller is genuine they will not mind waiting. If you are in any doubt don’t let them in.
"This offence highlights a common method suspects use to get into houses. Residents should be aware of these and if they are concerned about someone being persistent in getting into their house call the police."
Andrew Bowles, leader of Swale Borough Council, said: "Councillors have all been informed about this incident and reminded to carry their ID cards with them."
The first suspect is described as being white, aged between 20 and 30, around 5ft 6in tall, of medium build with fair hair and brown eyes. He wore a blue short sleeved shirt.
The second suspect was also white, aged between 30 and 40, around 5ft tall and of slim build.
Anyone with any information about this incident, which took place on Thursday, August 10, between 1pm and 1.45pm, is asked to contact police on 01795 419251 or Kent Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
