Not content with raising £360 in seven days to help his rallycross idol, a nine-year-old from Murston is planning to spend a whole year raising funds for charity.
Car-mad Cameron Harbird climbed Mount Snowdon last year to help his Instagram friend and racer, Daniel Rooke, from Devon, with funds to take part in his last two races of the season.
The youngster was amazed at how generous the public were and he has now decided to do something bigger and better for another cause, but this time over 365 days.
After researching which charity he should help, with the help of his mum, Jade Tong, he settled on Demelza Hospice Care for Children.
Cameron is planning to do a series of fundraising feats and has set himself a target of £2,000.
He intends to do the Three Peaks Challenge in the summer and his mum wants to set up a static bike at Sittingbourne’s Forum shopping centre where he can cycle the equivalent distance from here to France – about 56 miles as the crow flies.
He is also hoping to do a sausage sizzle at Bunnings in Sittingbourne and a raffle. Cameron’s school, Canterbury Road Primary, is also backing his efforts and hopes to hold some fundraisers.
Proud mum Jade, 27, said: “Last year he did it for a rallycross racer. After that he said ‘I want to do it again, mum’. So I said ‘Well, you’ve got to think of who you are going to do it for’. We did a lot of research and found that most of the funding for Demelza comes through charity events and outside funding.
“He wants to raise £2,000 and he is just adamant that he’s going to do it.
“It’s a lot of determination for someone so young.”
