TWO boys, one aged 10 and the other 14, have been arrested on suspicion of causing damage to gravestones in Capel Road, Sittingbourne.
Police were called to the area at around 10pm on Thursday night following reports of an incident.
The boys have been bailed to Sittingbourne Police Station pending further enquiries.
Spokeswoman Sally Smith said: "Police had been stepping up patrols in Capel Road a bid to stop ongoing reports of damage to the graveyard.
"It is hoped that the arrests will act as a deterrent to anyone who may consider acting anti-socially or causing vandalism in the area.
"Recent reports involved flowers being tossed around and gravestones being kicked. In an incident on Saturday, June 17, flowers and vases were damaged.
"Police recognise that the area has experienced similar problems over the last few years, especially in the summer months, and are determined to curb the problem."
PC Emma Holloway said: “During a recent patrol of a graveyard I met a woman who was concerned to leave flowers as she was worried they may be damaged or stolen. It is not acceptable that any person should feel that way.
“Though, to some, these actions may seem like a few minutes of fun, criminal damage is an crime and we will not hesitate in making arrests. We are keen to stop this behaviour so we can prevent the hurt and sadness experienced by those who tend to the graves.
The Rev Nick Finlay, area chaplain at Sittingbourne police station, stresssed: “Graveyards are places of solitude, reflection and remembrance and should be treated with respect.”
