An appeal has been launched for people to make donations to a charity shop after a safe containing a day’s takings was stolen during a burglary.
Scope, in Roman Square, Sittingbourne, was broken into overnight on Sunday, August 16.
As well as the cash, two DVD players were also taken, as well as a couple of mobile phones – of which the makes are not known – a GPS satnav for hikers, a black laptop and a Game Boy Advance handheld console with games.
Ward councillor Roger Truelove is now urging the community to rally round and make a donation to the cause which “exists to make this country a place where disabled people have the same opportunities as everyone else”.
He said: “How depressing. To think someone can be so cynical as to steal from a charity manned by volunteers and working to make life better for those with complex needs.
“This involves a considerable loss of money and I hope somehow we can come together as a community to help compensate them for this very disheartening event.
“I would urge people to go to the shop and make donations of either cash or goods so it can try to recoup the amount stolen.”
Ralph Beevers, divisional retail manager at Scope, said: “It is shocking that anyone would steal from a charity shop. Our staff and volunteers work tirelessly. They are upset that their good work has been undone by someone breaking into our shop.
“When money and items are stolen it denies us vital funds to support our work with disabled people. We’ve contacted the police and they are investigating the incident.”
Sgt Dan Fordom said: “This is very much an ongoing investigation with inquiries being carried out. However, if you do have any information about this incident, I would urge you to contact police.”
Witnesses or anyone with information is asked to call Sgt Fordom on 01795 419119 quoting crime reference XY/028632/15, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
