Call for lower speed limit after crash at new Oad Steet/Maidstone Road junction near A249 in Sittingbourne

There are calls for lower speed limits and better lighting following another crash at a new junction.

A car emerging from Maidstone Road onto Oad Street near Sittingbourne collided with another vehicle at around 6pm on Thursday.

Samantha Bell, who works at the Bayden Stud Livery Stables nearby, said: “I heard a skid and then a very loud crash. I rushed over to help.

“A young lad coming along Oad Street was hit by a woman coming out of the junction, spinning him round.

“Fortunately, he did not seem seriously hurt, although both drivers’ air bags went off, but he was very shaken up.”

The road, which links Oad Street to the newly revamped A249 and Stockbury roundabout, opened in June 2023.

Mrs Bell said: “This is the fourth accident at this junction that I am aware of since it was installed earlier this year as a result of the junction works on the A249.”

“The trouble is that the speed limit on Oad Street is 60mph and the junction is at the brow of a hill and on a bend. Added to that, it’s very dark there.

“My own daughter has had a similar narrow escape when someone pulled out in front of her.

“It’s really difficult to see cars coming, especially as they come so fast. The young lad last night said he had been doing about 50mph, which is within the speed limit.

“But even that is just too fast at this point. The speed limit should be lowered.

“It’s also a nightmare for us when we take the horses out along this road.

“Kent County Council (KCC) needs to look at this again.”

Kent Police said: “We were called at 6.14pm on Thursday to reports of a collision involving two cars on Oad Street, Sittingbourne.

“Officers attended and no injuries were reported.”

KCC has been asked for comment.
