Motorists faced delays on the A2 London Road towards Newington after a car crashed into a trench.

Police were called to the scene near the junction at Wises Lane at around 10.30am this morning.

Engineers from UK Power Networks were working in the hole to complete emergency works on electrical cables at the time.

It is believed the crash, involving a red Ford Fiesta, did not result in any injuries.

Witnesses reported seeing the driver passing queuing cars waiting at the traffic lights.

A spokesman for UK Power Networks said: "Whilst staff working on behalf of UK Power Networks were completing repairs on an underground cable, a car has drove into an excavation coming in contact with the electricity cables.

"There were no reported injuries for staff working on behalf of UK Power Networks and emergency services were called to the area to remove the car.

"The cables sustained minor damage, which are being assessed by staff on site, electricity supplies were not affected by this incident."
