A drink driver has been arrested after a car ploughed through the window of a disused restaurant.

Witnesses said two cars were involved in the crash on the A2 in Newington which damaged a building once home to The Inglenook Restaurant.

A member of staff at the nearby Bull Inn said: "Two cars have been in an accident and one has crashed through the window of the building that used to be The Inglenook. That's been closed for a few years now.

"It happened at about 6.30pm.

"Police and fire crews are still there but an ambulance has been and gone. There weren't any injuries, I don't think."

Officers arrested one of the drivers at 6.20pm after they were found to be drink driving.

The 36-year-old man remains in custody. No charges have yet been filed.

The road was closed in both directions by police just before 7pm, with queueing traffic as a result.

A Kent Fire and Rescue spokesman said: "Crews are currently at the scene of a car crash involving two cars on High Street, Newington.

"One of the cars had gone into a building but crews have now removed the car after the building was deemed stable.

"There are no people trapped in the vehicles and there have been no reported injuries."

The road was re-open by 8.55pm.
