A takeaway has been given one of the lowest hygiene ratings possible by inspectors, and told major improvements over food safety must be made.

Kwun's Chinese, in Sonora Fields, Sittingbourne, was handed the second-to-worst mark of just one point after inspectors visited in August.

KentOnline asked Swale council for the full report, which would explain exactly what was wrong with the takeaway's health standards.

However, the authority said the investigation was ongoing and a Freedom of Information (FOI) request would need to be submitted for further details.

As a result, only a brief description of what was wrong with the business has been publicly posted.

Included was that major improvements were necessary to the management of food safety.

This means the system or checks in place to ensure food sold or served is safe to eat was unsatisfactory.

There also would have been little evidence staff knew about food safety.

At the inspection, which took place on August 18, it was also noted the cleanliness and condition of the facilities and building also required improvement.

Despite this, the inspector did confirm that hygienic food handling was generally satisfactory.

This means preparation, cooking, re-heating, cooling and storage was to an appropriate standard.

Kwun's Chinese was approached for comment via phone and letter but has not responded.

A council spokesman said: “There is an ongoing investigation and we’re working with the operators in the usual way to make sure they are complying with the necessary food hygiene standards.”

A re-inspection of the takeaway is due to take place in the next month and a half. Inspectors can issue ratings between zero, the worst, and a top mark of five.
