A church is facing a massive repair bill after an inspector uncovered major roof problems.
Big plans to create a busy £750,000 community centre within St Michael’s Church will now compete for cash with the roof repair fund.
An inspector found problems with the roof during a routine check – parts of it could fall away at any time.
But the congregation will be safe as it is in a part of the church not used by the public, nor can it be seen, which has meant the problem has been there for some time but not spotted.
The vicar of St Michael and St Mary, the Rev Nick Finlay, says at least £120,000 must be raised if English Heritage doesn’t offer a 50 per cent grant.
And he is making an impassioned plea to town business people to help restore the roof and help get the community project underway.
Mr Finlay said: “The roof is basically sound, but it is the supporting areas that need repair.
“We have applied to English Heritage for a grant, but that would only be for half the cost.
“There are a lot of people in Sittingbourne who would be very upset if the church became derelict. We hope there are businesses who would like to help us raise the money to allow us to maintain the structure of the building.
“I invite the community to help St Michael’s in its desperate hour of need.”
He hopes supporters will consider making bequests or donating in memory of a loved relative.
“We try very hard to support the community, now will they support us?” Mr Finlay said.
