Concern grows over park flashers

CONCERN is growing over how to tackle lewd acts in a Sittingbourne park after a man indecently exposed himself to a 20-year-old woman.

The incident is the ninth in and around Albany Park since June. Police fear installation of a state-of-the-art security camera and increased patrols are not deterring the men.

The park and cemetery in Capel Road is known to be a popular haunt for men who like to expose themselves, as well as being a vandalism and crime hot spot. The latest incident took place last Monday at about 6pm and follows a spate in the summer.

Swale police spokeswoman Sally Farrell said: "It is a cause for concern but we don't want people to panic. We have installed CCTV cameras as a result of the exposures and complaints from residents about ongoing damage in the park. It did seem to stop the problem for a while, but he has struck again."

The descriptions of the men involved in the exposures vary although police believe they are the work of one or two men only. The man involved in last week's incident was aged between 30 and 40, six feet tall with a slim build and brown hair. He was wearing a beige jacket.

The man avoided being caught on the mobile camera recently installed in the park.

According to Miss Farrell, plainclothes officers have increased patrols in the park, which has also been the focus of several police operations in recent months.

But she added: "Because the times of the incidents are sporadic, it is quite difficult. It is something police are paying particular attention to. We are trying to do our best but it is a very tricky one."

Anyone with information about the latest indecent exposure can call Swale police on 01795 477055 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
