He said: "I used to deliver training in working in confined spaces years ago. Perhaps other ex-ambulance staff, firefighters and trainers may have others hidden away in their lofts or garages?"

The councillor, who represents Hartlip, Newington and Upchurch, is now recovering from a suspected case of coronavirus at his home in Station Road, Newington.

He said: "The ambulance team seemed certain but decided not to admit me and suggested I self-treat at home. Luckily, I have a spare room and separate bathroom."

Cllr Palmer is also chairman of the Sittingbourne branch of the Royal British Legion. He served in the Army with the 2nd Battalion, the Queen's Regiment, during the 1970s and 80s.
