A man in his 60s remains in a serious condition following a crash between a car and a cyclist along a notorious stretch of road.

The incident occurred in Bapchild along the A2 London Road near the junction with Hempstead Lane yesterday evening.

Police were called to the scene at about 6.40pm to a report of a collision between a blue Volkswagen Golf and a 62-year-old cyclist.

Residents reported the crash looked "horrible", as an air ambulance landed nearby and the main road was closed in both directions.

Mandy Holstock, owner of the nearby Hempstead House Hotel, told KentOnline: "I was concerned.

"We saw the air ambulance coming in as it landed at back of our property.

"There was an ambulance there and several police cars, but I don't know how many were in attendance."

The cyclist, who is from Sittingbourne, was taken to a London hospital by road.

A police spokesman says the man remains in a serious but stable condition.

The route has been the scene of seven fatal crashes over the last 11 years.

Sittingbourne Community College pupil Kyle Coen, 14, died after he was hit by a grey Fiat Bravo while cycling along the road close to the entrance of Bapchild Cricket Club in 2012.

Three years later, motorcyclist Andrew Beaney was killed when his blue and silver Suzuki motorcycle collided with a silver Volkswagen Jetta.

And Alan McWhinnie died after being struck by a silver Ford Fiesta Zetec along the stretch two years ago.

Ms Holstock added: "Traffic calming measures have been put in, but you do hear people driving very fast along the road.

"At night especially you do hear people driving very fast."
