Drivers faced long delays on the A249 after a hole appeared in the road.
Police shut the Maidstone-bound carriageway, near the Bobbing turn-off, so engineers could carry out repairs.
The road was closed at about 4pm.
A police spokesman said: "We were called at 3.30pm following reports of a piece of metal in the road on the A249, Maidstone-bound near to Bobbing.
"Officers put on a rolling road block to clear the metal, but have found a hole in the road.
"The road is now closed so highways can deal with the hole."
An eyewitness said all traffic was being taken off at Bobbing.
"It is then clear from there," he added.
Highways England tweeted just after 8pm to confirm the road had reopened.
