SITTINGBOURNE'S severe traffic problems should cease next week when Mill Way re-opens after a bridge over it has been demolished. Work is continuing apace to pull down the metal bridge leading to the paper mill while cars and vans use a temporary road nearby. The central section of the bridge was being removed today.

Mill spokesman David Scudder said: "We are delighted by the progress being made on demolishing the bridge. Two large mechanical diggers are bringing it down piece by piece.

"By next week both lanes under the bridge should re-open and we can then close the temporary road which has proved to be a great help in easing the congestion."

The bridge was seriously damaged three weeks ago when an excavator on a low-loader crashed into it. Local businesses have been severely affected.
