Adults pestered into buying booze for underage youngsters are warned they could be landed with an £80 fine.
The Swale Community Safety unit has launched an initiative which will see police and licensing officers visiting 54 retailers to tackle underage drinking.
While retailers can lose their premises licence, individuals caught buying alcohol for consumption by under-18s could face a substantial fine and a criminal record.
Stephanie Mead, community safety officer and campaign co-ordinator, said: “Children who drink under the age of 15 are five times more likely to have alcohol abuse problems later in life.
“The SAFE campaign aims to co-ordinate the activities of the police, licensing departments and street wardens to tackle the immediate problems of underage drinking and proxy sales, as well as the other issues that arise from it.
“Underage drinking can lead to anti-social behaviour issues of nuisance and noise, but also vandalism, graffiti, violence and even drug abuse.
“Our aim is to not only reiterate the message to retailers, but also educate the community and the kids themselves, about the dangers of underage drinking and the consequences of buying alcohol on behalf of anyone under the legal drinking age.”
Geoff Rowley, police licensing officer, added: “I am sure that many of our retailers will welcome this initiative, which aims to assist them in dealing with proxy sales.
“Young people can pester customers to buy them alcohol so no doubt the licensees will be glad when the posters go up, sending a clear message that neither they nor their customers will give them alcohol.”
