Emergency crews had to be called in after a blaze ripped through a field of corn and barley.

Teams in four fire engines were sent to Vigo Lane in Borden where five hectares, about six football pitches, caught on fire at 3.17pm yesterday.

Two bulk water carriers were also dispatched.

Crews used a hose, fire beaters and a fog spike to bring it under control.

It is understood a farming vehicle could have caused the blaze, which is being treated as accidental.

A Kent Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: "We'd ask people to take care in dry conditions.

"There were very hazardous conditions because of how rapid the fire spread through the corn and the wind can change its direction."

There were no reported injuries.

Firefighters had left by 4.02pm.
