A woman had to be cut free from the car she was travelling in after it left the motorway and hit a tree.

Firefighters from Sittingbourne and Faversham, Kent Police, South East Coast Ambulance service and Kent Air Ambulance were all called to the accident which happened on the M2 london bound carriageway between junctions five and six at about 11.30am today.

The motorway between Faversham and Sittingbourne was closed for two hours while the emergency services dealt with the incident.

It's not known how the accident happened but it's understood the car - believed to be a Rover, left the carriageway and travelled up an embankment covered in snow before hitting a tree.

The woman in her 20s who was in the back of the car, was trapped by her foot which was stuck underneath the back of the driver's seat. She also suffered head and chest injuries.

The ambulance crew administered pain relief before firefighters managed to free the woman's foot by using hydraulic cutting equipment to remove the chair.

Once freed the woman was placed on a long board and flown by Kent Air Ambulance to the William Harvey Hospital in Ashford.

She is said to be in a stable condition.

It is not known what injuries the male driver of the car sustained but it is understood he was also taken to hospital for treatment.
