Two men were killed early today after the car they were travelling in left the road and hit an historic monument.
Police, fire and ambulance crews were called to London Road, Teynham, at around 1.20am after the single-vehicle accident involving a blue Renault Clio.
The car was travelling from the Faversham direction towards Sittingbourne, and the crash happened opposite the Dover Castle public house.
Firefighters used hydraulic rescue equipment and, working with paramedics, created enough space to reach the driver and passengers.
It is understood two men in their 20s died at the scene while another man and a woman of the same age were flown by air ambulance to hospital in London with serious injuries.
Further details have not yet been made released by the police who are currently in the process of speaking with family members. An update is expected soon.
The crash destroyed the historic water pump which was erected to mark Queen Victoria's diamond jubilee.
The monument was rebuilt in recent years after another car accident seriously damaged it in 2008.
Anyone who witnessed the incident or has any information is asked to call the police's serious collision investigation unit on 01622 798538.
