A major motorway junction is set to be partially closed for four months, starting from Sunday night, as part of multi-million pound improvement plans.
The eastbound on- and off-slip roads at Junction 5 near Stockbury will be closed from 8pm Sunday, September 11, and are set to remain shut until Friday, January 13, while National Highways complete works on creating new slip roads on and off the motorway.
Previously the closure was expected to begin on Monday, but National Highways say it will be enforced from Sunday due to overnight work necessary on Stockbury Roundabout.
The roundabout itself will be completely closed from 8pm on Sunday until 5am on Monday, September 12, to allow for white lines to be refreshed - work which National Highways says follows feedback from the community and stakeholders.
Other routes will also be affected overnight from Monday to Sunday - with closures in place on the M20 Junction 7 slip road onto the A249 for Sittingbourne, the M2 Junction 5 westbound on- and off-slip roads, the A249 southbound between Bobbing and Stockbury roundabouts, and Chestnut Street between Key Street and Stockbury roundabout, although access will be maintained for residents.
A statement from National Highways added: "We know there’s never a good time to complete this kind of work at a busy junction like this, and understand these closures will cause disruption to journeys, for which we apologise.
"Closing the slip roads for a solid block of time not only keeps disruption to a minimum in the long run, but it is also safer for you, our workers and for everyone using the M2.
"In January 2023, both slip roads will re-open. Access from the M2 eastbound to the A249 northbound (towards Sittingbourne) will temporarily be via the Stockbury roundabout, until the dedicated slip opens in spring 2023."
Further information is available here on the National Highways website.
During the four month slip road closure, drivers will not be able to access Stockbury roundabout from the M2 eastbound, or join the M2 eastbound from Stockbury roundabout at Junction 5.
Drivers joining the M2 eastbound will need use the M2 westbound from Stockbury roundabout to travel to junction 4 and return.
Those travelling eastbound and leaving the motorway, will need to leave at Junction 3 and use the A229, M20 and A249 to reach the Stockbury roundabout.
