Motorists across Swale say they feel “ripped off” after discovering diesel costs a whopping 14p less at a petrol station just six miles away in another borough.

Angela Millard, who lives near Abbey Way in Kemsley, says she is enraged after realising the “ridiculous” difference in fuel prices between an ASDA garage in Sittingbourne and another in Rainham.

The 68-year-old said: “Sittingbourne’s fuel prices have been high since the price rocket after Covid and the Ukraine invasion.

“Prior to that, I would always fill up my car and then do my shopping at Sittingbourne ASDA.

“But after realising that I could get diesel a whole 14p a litre cheaper in Rainham I now drive there and then come back to Sittingbourne to do my shopping.

“It is ridiculous, by driving just over five miles to Rainham I am saving £7 a tank and that £7 is a lot in today's economic crisis.

“The way things are going I think I will drive to Rainham forever to get my petrol if things in Sittingbourne don’t change.”

Angela, a retired nan-of-four, feels that the area’s steep prices are due to corporate “greed”.

She continued: “It is greed, these big companies are taking advantage of the situation and it is wrong.

“I asked why the prices were so high in Sittingbourne and was told it is because BP’s prices are so high.

“I got so angry about it that I wanted to make others aware of the money they could be saving.

“I feel like I should be holding a placard outside Sittingbourne ASDA saying ‘Don’t get ripped off, drive five miles to Rainham.”

Sittingbourne ASDA is selling unleaded petrol for 142.7p and diesel for 146.7p.

The ASDA garage in Rainham is selling unleaded petrol for 136.7p and diesel for a much lower 132.7p.

When approached for comment the supermarket giant explained that all retailers vary the price of their fuel depending on area.

Factors such as supply, the base price of fuel, and local competition can also affect the cost of filling up at each station and is standard across the industry.

A spokesman said: “Asda is the price leader in the supermarket fuel sector and we remain focussed on providing our customers with the best value at the pumps.”

According to the PetrolPrices app Morrisons and ASDA in Sittingbourne have the cheapest petrol in the area, both are selling the fuel at 142.7p.

Texaco charges 142.9p a litre and the nearby BP garage charges 143.9p for unleaded petrol.

Angela added: “I want older people to be aware of this price difference so they can save money.

“We’re being ripped off, it is profiteering and it is wrong. We need to make a stand on this and let people know they have a choice to get cheaper fuel.”

It isn’t just Sittingbourne drivers who are noticing the price pinch.

Samuel Baverstock, who works on the Isle of Sheppey, noticed the steep cost difference between petrol stations when he was on his way to an appointment at Medway Hospital.

At the Tesco petrol station in Sheerness unleaded petrol is 144.9p and diesel is 146.9p.

At the Tesco garage in Gillingham, unleaded is 136.9p and diesel is 132.9p.​​

The 33-year-old said: “I rarely leave Sittingbourne and the Island as that is where I live and work.

“So when I drove through Medway and saw that petrol was almost £10 less for a tank I was p***** off.

“I don’t understand why there is such a difference, I don’t know how it is justifiable.”

Tesco was approached for comment but declined to issue a statement.

However, like ASDA, the supermarket confirmed it does regularly monitor fuel prices throughout the local area to ensure it’s providing competitive prices for its customers.
