A six-year-old girl’s floral design for a town centre roundabout has won her first prize in a competition.

Leah Fewtrell, a pupil at South Avenue Infant School, was among some 400 youngsters who entered this year’s Sittingbourne in Bloom competition.

Each year, pupils from schools across the town are invited to submit a design for a floral display at the station roundabout in St Michaels’s Road.

The roundabout is planted in May according to the winning design and the winner’s name displayed on a board on the roundabout during the summer.

Sittingbourne in Bloom chairman, Michael Moore, said judging this year’s entires had been difficult.

"The kids are very ingeneous," he said. "They put a lot of thought into their designs."

The original entries were whittled down to 20 to 30 by Sittingbourne in Bloom co-ordinators David and Sallie Shaw, with the shortlisted designed judged by the committee.

"Leah’s entry was quite an original design and it was one we thought would look good when it was planted up because of the colour and lay-out," said Mr Moore.

Leah, who will help with planting the roundabout, was presented with her prize of vouchers by the Mayor of Swale Cllr Adrian Crowther.

She was joined by runner-up Lansdowne Primary School pupil Courtney Cook, nine, and Jessica Moss, 10, from Grove Park Community Primary School, who received certificates of commendation.
