A cyclist is appealing for witnesses to a hit-and-run accident which left him with a fractured collarbone.

Roi Larrett was riding along the Sheppey-bound carriageway of the A249 when the accident happened between the Iwade turn-off and the layby before the new Sheppey bridge.

The personal trainer and deputy manager of Reynolds Health and Fitness, London Road, Sittingbourne, had just finished his shift.

He was making his way home when a dark car, possibly a Vauxhall Vectra, clipped him, causing him to fall from his bike and fracture his right collarbone.

The dad-of-three, of Saxon Avenue, Minster, was wearing reflective clothing and protective headgear at the time.

He said: "I could hear a car getting too close to me then it just hit me and took me off my bike.

"I couldn’t use my right arm and I could feel my collarbone was broken, but I managed to crawl across to the grass as I didn’t want to get clipped by another car.

"I still had my backpack on, so I took that off, got out my mobile and called my wife, Malika, and she then called for an ambulance. I tried to stop drivers by using the light on my phone to wave them down. A lad called Callum stopped with his mum and John and Maggie, who are members at the gym and live on the Island just up the road from me, were coming back from Asda. They stopped and helped and took the bike back home for me.

"Then the police and ambulance came."

The 31-year-old was placed on a spinal board and taken to Medway Maritime Hospital in Gillingham, where was kept in until the following afternoon.

He said: "The force they hit me with was such that I landed 10ft to 15ft away from my bike.

"I do consider myself very lucky – it could have been much worse. The speed they drive along that road, it could have easily been a very different story."
