Hundreds of residents in Iwade could have their gas cut off as officials investigate the cause of low pressure in the area.

Many have taken to social media throughout the day to complain their boilers and cooking facilities were not working properly.

Southern Gas Network has since confirmed it will be carrying out survey work in the village this evening on 10 properties across the village to try and identify where the drop of pressure is coming from.

Parish councillor James Hunt, who has been monitoring the situation, said supplies could be shut off despite the cold weather.

He said: “A similar problem occurred last year where we saw water inside the gas pipes which caused misery for many as it had to be shut off.

“Southern Gas Network will check where the low points are and see if any of the recent flooding can be linked.

“Obviously this time of year is a real concern especially with the elderly.

“If the problem is the same as it was last year then it’s going to be a major problem.”

A spokesman for Southern Gas Network confirmed they were investigating the issue.

He said: “We’re currently investigating reports of poor pressure affecting a handful of gas supplies to customers in Iwade.

“Our senior engineers are on site to see whether we have water in the network or if there’s a problem with the local governor, which is a piece of equipment that regulates the pressure of gas in the network.

“We’ll provide an update once we’ve completed our investigations.”
