Dog warden, Mel Herbert, was desperate for a dog rescue centre to step forward to take care of the old girl after she'd in the pound for the last 56 days.

However, on Tuesday, it seemed that all hope for the pooch had been lost after she was diagnosed with diabetes – a condition the council couldn't afford to medicate.

Mel said: "She's completely blind in her right eye and her left is severely affected. This in itself sheds some light on why she's so head-shy.

"Though diabetes itself isn't a death sentence, leaving it untreated can be and sadly, as a council, we don't have the resources to provide her with the necessary treatment.

"Unless a rescue can come forward within the next week to offer her a lifeline, Rosie will cross the rainbow bridge under veterinary advice.

"For those of you who know our service, you'll know this wasn't an easy conversation and it certainly isn't the outcome we wanted, but her comfort and welfare are our main priority.

"Life can be so cruel."

But on Wednesday Mel confirmed Rosie was safe thanks to volunteers at Saints Sled Dog Rescue, a charity which helps to rehome unwanted Siberian huskies and Alaskan malamutes across England and Scotland.

In an update she said: "The amazing team at Saints Sled Dog Rescue have jumped in and agreed to take her, saving her life in the process.

"We're in tears, we cannot thank them enough."
