A high street café has closed barely a year after opening its doors.
The Albion, in Newington, Sittingbourne first rolled out its new-look eatery in May last year.
The tea room sold cakes, scones and lunch meals such as baguettes and omlettes.
However, the café, which seated more than 30 guests on eight tables, has now called it a day.
Owner Umar Abanifi says the establishment was unique in the village – something he believes didn’t go unnoticed by residents and guests following its £40,000 investment.
The 54-year-old said: “Closing The Albion was not an easy decision for myself and my wife to make.
“I bought the building two years ago to try and transform a derelict high street.
“What we created was something uncommon in the modern hospitality industry these days.
“Our business ethos was to serve our community and provide a local hub post-covid for people in Newington, and the surrounding villages, to meet and enjoy quality and affordable food in this unique, historic and tranquil setting.
“But I am truly touched by the positive comments from most of our customers - more so due to the fact we’ve only been open less than a year.
“There is no decision at the moment as to what happens next with the building either, but the residential part is on the market for rental.”
The Albion’s departure comes just days after Turkish restaurant, Cinar Kitchen, closed on Sittingbourne High Street.
Just hours after the closure was announced, the cafe was met with a raft of supportive comments.
Speaking on Facebook, one person said: “In a short space of time you became the heart of our community.
“Every visit was such a pleasure with tasty food, friendly staff and the loveliest welcome from Umar.”
Another person added: “It’s such a loss to the village, but thank you for the amazing service and food we’ve had since you’ve been open – you will be missed.”
