A mother-of-three has completed a mammoth charity challenge – walking 500 miles in 30 days.
Lynne McCann, from Sittingbourne, spent more than 200 hours throughout the month of April clocking up the miles to raise money for Cancer Research UK in memory of her friend Claudie Streatfield.
Lynne, who works at Tesco Express in Chalkwell Road, walked an average of 16.8 miles a day from April 1 to 30, totalling a whopping 504 miles.
When asked how it all came about, the 52-year-old said: “At work they do a lot of fundraising and they know I’m always up for something. It started off as a bit of banter with my boss; I just said if I managed to raise £500, I’d walk 500 miles.”
“I never thought in a million years I would get £500,” she joked. “But I did, and in no time at all, so my friend Tommy Marks told me to start a fundraising page.”
Lynne, who was joined on some of her treks by her close pal Amy Wheatley, walked all around Sittingbourne, country parks and even from Whitstable to Herne Bay and back.
“It was the hardest thing I have ever done in my life,” she said. “I didn’t realise just how hard it would be. I was walking for like six or seven hours a day and still going to work – my whole life was walking for a month but it helped me mentally and saved me really.
“It was the hardest thing I have ever done in my life; I didn’t realise just how hard it would be."
“My marriage ended and, for me, it was really hard to adjust afterwards.
“Walking is such a good thing. It’s pulled me through everything and it’s been a difficult time for everyone over this past year or so.”
She added: “I am so glad I have done it. I just want to say thank you to all of the people who have supported me and been there for me. I could never have got through it without them.”
Lynne chose to do the walking challenge in aid of Cancer Research UK.
“Because of the coronavirus pandemic, it seems like this charity has sort of been forgotten about, that’s why I wanted to raise as much money for it as possible,” she said. “I also did it in honour of one of my friends, Claudie Streatfield, who sadly passed away in her early 40s.”
So far, Lynne has raised £2,100 for the charity, and she said donations were still coming in.
