A249 Maidstone-bound reopen as jackknifed lorry causes heavy delays between Sheppey and Sittingbourne

All lanes have reopened on a busy stretch of road after a lorry jackknifed.

The A249 Maidstone-bound was blocked from about 6.30am this morning.

It reopened shortly after 10am this morning.

It was causing heavy delays from the B2231 Sheppey Way (Lower Halstow turn off) to B2005 Grovehurst Road (Iwade / Kemsley turn off) heading to Sittingbourne.

Drivers were unable to access the Sheppey Crossing in this direction, with some facing two hours of queues.

Traffic is still busier than normal following the incident.

Emergency services were also spotted at the scene.

Speaking at 8am this morning, a police spokesman said: "Officers are currently dealing with a jackknifed lorry on the Maidstone-bound carriageway of the A249 between the Sheppey Crossing and Iwade.

"No injuries have been reported and vehicles travelling from the Isle of Sheppey towards Maidstone are being diverted at the Queenborough roundabout onto Sheppey Way."

Drivers in Minster were also affected.

Motorists on the A249 Sheppey-bound did not face any problems.
