A 10-week-old kitten was left fighting for his life after being found with a fractured leg and maggot-infested wound at the base of his tail.
Bandit the tabby was discovered with the horrible injuries in the front garden of a home in Bobbing Hill, near Sittingbourne, on Thursday night.
It was originally thought the kitten had been thrown over the residents’ fence and abandoned, but CCTV from the house later showed Bandit making his own way into the garden from the path.
After hearing his wails of pain over their TV, the couple who live there rang Cats Protection Swale, a volunteer animal service, which helped get him medical care.
A spokesman for the charity said: “The injury has been festering for days.
“The area was searched and no other kittens were found, but it is possible there are some.
“To anyone thinking of getting rid of a cat or kitten, please don’t. Take them to a rescue.
“Yes, we are full and all inundated with cats but if you come to us with something like this, we will help.”
After days in the vets Bandit is now in the care of the volunteer group’s welfare team leader, Kim Braysher, who explained the kitten will need his tail amputated.
She said: “He’s doing amazing now and is a lot better.
“The vets were really good as well and got straight onto him when they found adult maggots in his wound and a fractured leg.
“He’s an adorable creature and is so loving.
“We think it’s a good chance he was bitten on the tail and flies have got into it and laid eggs.
“We’re not completely sure about the leg injury, but it’s possible it could be a bite as well.”
Bandit is currently on three lots of medication and needs his bandage changing daily.
“He needs a bit of care now,” Kim added.
