Laser beam damages woman's eye

By Hayley Robinson

A football spectator suffered damage to her eye after a laser beam was shone at her.

Police are investigating the incident which happened following a five-a-side football match organised by Pitch Invasion and held on the artificial pitches at the Westlands School, Westlands Avenue, Sittingbourne.

The woman suffered blurred vision as a result of the incident which happened just after 8.30pm on March 21. Fortunately the damage isn’t permanent and she has been told her vision will return to normal in time.

The laser beam is believed to have been shone by someone travelling in a dark coloured Vauxhall Astra which was leaving the grounds after the game.

Inspector Phil Hibben, of the Sittingbourne neighbourhood team, said: "Using laser pens or beams inappropriately can lead to serious and permanent injury and makes the user liable to prosecution for numerous criminal offences including assault.

"I would also emphasise that while some may see the use of such items as a mischievous prank, for the victims this can be a frightening experience that on occasion has led to life changing injuries."

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact police on 01795 419182 quoting crime reference
CY/004781/11.
