Lesley Evans set herself the task of completing 60 things at 60 to mark her milestone birthday.

Three years on and that list of firsts has grown to 100 with the number set to continue to rise.

Since celebrating her big day on May 16, 2011, the mum-of-two has held a tarantula, eaten squirrel pie, had a fish pedicure, driven a forklift truck and taken part in two TV shows – BBC2’s Eggheads and ITV’s The Chase.

More recently she fulfilled another one of her wishes thanks to the Sittingbourne and Kemsley Light Railway – to ‘drive a train’.

The idea was prompted by Year 10 pupils Josh Mepstead and Bernard Redman, who volunteer at the tourist attraction.

The 63-year-old, who works as a librarian at Fulston Manor School, said: “You can’t really drive it as it drives itself so I was standing on the foot plate watching them shovel the coal in and tooting the whistle.

“We set off from Sittingbourne and went to Kemsley Down and back then I did it again as I enjoyed it so much.

“I’ve done some fantastic things.

“Since drawing up my list I decided to do 12 things in 2012, 13 in 2013, 14 in 2014 so this year I’m doing 15.

“In June I’m going to the House of Lords for afternoon tea. I try new drinks, I’ve been on a canal boat, I even took a bus to Maidstone – it doesn’t sound very exciting but I usually go by car. It’s all about doing things I’ve never done before, a way of living life to the full.”

So what has been her most memorable moment?

“I should say my daughter’s weddings to start with,” she laughed.

“But I think the best thing was going to the races in Folkestone where I met the jockeys and even had a race named after me, that was one of the things I really enjoyed. Ascot doesn’t really appeal to me.”

And the one thing she would really love to do?

“Meet former England cricket captain Michael Vaughan OBE.”
