Westlands Primary School pupils learn life-saving skills to mark Drowning Prevention Week

Year 6 pupils took a break from the curriculum to learn life-saving skills.

To mark Drowning Prevention Week Westlands Primary children carried out the course in their school pool.

It saw them get in the water whilst wearing their own clothes to practise towing another child to safety using floats and carrying out CPR on a dummy called Bob.

They were shown how to do 30 compressions to the chest per minute, whilst no longer giving mouth-to-mouth.

However, the youngsters were told that no matter what, the best and first thing they should always do is contact the emergency services via telephone or face-to-face and to call for help by any means.

Swimming teacher Barbara Hall, said: “This is a fantastic cause for the children to take part in as it communicates how important a skill swimming is, particularly as many others their age do not having the same swimming capabilities owing to their not having access to a pool.

“Westlands Primary School has long supported this cause and is keen for all the pupils to learn all essential skills for their future, as well as the fun that swimming can be.”
