Not since Bill Wyman shocked the rock world by leaving the Rolling Stones has a bass-player quitting a band caused so much wailing and gnashing of teeth.
After 22 years, Saul Watson, he of the illuminated bass guitar, has left popular Sittingbourne, Medway and Sheppey group Marylebone Jelly.
His farewell tour ended on Friday at a packed Fountain of Ale pub in Sittingbourne with a final 'lights out' appearance.
He admitted after his last song Jumpin' Jack Flash: "It was quite an emotional show."
Among those paying tributes to the bassist were former EastEnders' actor Shaun Williamson and Saul's hero, Mark King of Level 42. His band mates also presented him with a photo album of past gigs.
Saul's decision to quit shook Jelly fans to the core.
But the former session man who has toured with Steps was determined to leave one of Kent's busiest party bands to pursue other projects.
He said: "When we started, we had no idea how popular the band would become. I love performing but we seldom get a night off. I need to see what else is out there."
Singer Ed Austin admitted: “It was really sad but Saul has made his mind up. We will, however, remain firm friends. We are like brothers.”
Among the audience was Saul's replacement, former Fat Badger bassist Chris Payne.
Chris, dubbed ‘Riggo’ by the boys, said: “It all began when I ran into a fellow bass-player over breakfast at Wetherspoon’s who casually dropped into the conversation that Marylebone Jelly were on the hunt for a bassist.
“Several emails and text messages later, I found myself sitting in my car outside a studio waiting for my audition. In 25 years of playing I had never had to audition before!
“Our paths had crossed, playing the same festivals and events, and I remember saying how good they were after seeing them at Iwade Rock so I was over the moon just to be asked to audition.
"Apparently, it went well and the guys asked me if I’d like to become a member of the massive music machine that is Marylebone Jelly.”
He added: “I’ve not taken on this role lightly. Saul is one of the top bassists on the live circuit. I’m not here to fill his boots but to stand where he stood and bring my own style and groove.
"I just know that what’s coming is going to be something very special. I truly can’t wait to get up there with the Jellies.”
Fans will be able to see his debut at Woodcoombe Sports and Social Club in Murston on Saturday, October 26. The lads are also playing at Regis Manor Primary School fireworks spectacular on Friday, November 8.
The band’s 80s Mixtape 2 Halloween Thriller at the Appleyard in Sittingbourne on November 2 with the A-Tees and Matt Endersby has sold out.
It has been a busy few weeks for the band. Drummer Neil Ranger tied the knot with Amanda Last in Las Vegas last month.
