RAIL services were suspended today after a man reportedly jumped in front of a train at a Kent station.
The tragedy happened as the 10.04am train from Dover Priory to Victoria pulled into Sittingbourne station.
The man, believed to be aged about 50, died instantly under the wheels. British Transport Police cordoned off the platforms and train passengers were taken off a few at a time to be interviewed by officers.
Three police patrol cars and an ambulance were on the scene and stranded passengers were milling around outside the station in St Michael’s Road.
South Eastern Trains spokesman Nigel Jarrett said the person plunged in front of the train at the "country end" of the platform - the end furthest away from London.
He added: "South Eastern Trains and Network Rail are now assisting British Transport Police with investigation. Current on the 750 volt third rail is switched off to facilitate track access for emergency services."
Mr Jarrett said the incident, which happened at about 10.45am, meant train services on the Chatham main line would be suspended for at least two hours.
He added: "This is a very unfortunate incident and SET would naturally wish to express its sympathy with the family and friends of the person involved."
"The driver of the train is receiving attention under our "chain of care".
Buses supplied by Chalkwell Coaches were pulling into the station to provide transport for stranded passengers.
Steve Rowson, 17, of Halfway, Sheppey, said: "I go to Fulston Manor School in Sittingbourne and am trying to get home but will have to go by bus due to the incident."
Among members of British Transport Police called to the scene was Bob Gee who is featured in the BBC series Rail Cops being shown on TV at the moment to give watchers an insight into their work.
