Temporary traffic lights will be on the A2 London Road at Teynham from Tuesday, May 28 for engineers carry out surveys on a water main.
South East Water will be checking almost a mile of 50-year-old pipe which it is planning to replace over the next year.
The main has burst several times recently.
The survey follows talks with Kent Highways, Swale Borough Council, Teynham Parish Council and businesses to keep disruption to a minimum.
South East Water's project manager Jeremy Dufour said: “These ground investigation surveys are crucial to give us the information we need before we replace the old water mains.
“I know that the A2 is a very busy road and our work will cause some disruption but the traffic lights are the only way we can keep road users and our workforce safe.
“We’ve been working closely with Kent Highways, Swale Borough Council, Teynham Parish Council and local businesses to plan our work and minimise any inconvenience for motorists and village residents."
The utility company will dig a series of pits between Station Road and Claxfield Road to check the ground’s structure and identify other underground pipes and cables.
Surveys on the water main in Lower Road will take place immediately before work starts to replace that section of pipe.
Work will be carried out over three phases.
May 28 to June 7: Station Road to Lynsted Lane
June 10 to 14: Lynsted Lane to Frognal Lane
June 17 to 24: Frognal Lane to Claxfield Road
Construction workers will be on site up to 12-hours a day from Monday to Friday to complete the project as quickly as possible.
The traffic lights will be removed at weekends if no work is taking place.
