A mother and her teenage son smashed up his ex-girlfriend’s family home and car after going round to demand she stop harassing him.
Sarah and Jake Roberts went to his former lover’s home in a bid to speak to the girl and her parents about her behaviour towards him since their split.
They claim she was harassing him by sending him food deliveries in the middle of the night and had even faked positive pregnancy tests in an attempt to get back together.
But when the pair got to the house in Iwade, near Sittingbourne, they were seen acting aggressively.
They started banging on the door and, when nobody answered, erupted with anger, kicking the entrance, throwing bricks at the family’s BMW and using ball bearings to smash the windows.
Last Thursday, the 38-year-old mum and her 18-year-old son, both of Pippin End, Sittingbourne, appeared in the dock together at Medway Magistrates’ Court, where they admitted criminal damage.
Jake was also charged with being in possession of a knuckleduster at Sittingbourne railway station in a separate incident on December 5 last year, to which he also pleaded guilty.
He said he had the weapon for protection after being beaten up several times, and had chosen it as he didn’t want to carry a knife.
The court heard that, on March 18, the mother and son had caused nearly £4,000 worth of damage, including £2,450 in repairs to the home and £1,500 to the car.
Sarah Madden, prosecuting, said: “The criminal damage was caused by them together after the break up of his relationship with the girl.
“They both went to the address in Iwade and started banging on the door aggressively and then they initially left.
“However, they then returned and that’s when the criminal damage happened when bricks were thrown at the BMW and then Jake used ball bearings to smash the windows on the house and there was also damage done to the front door as he kicked it.”
Victim impact statements were read out in which the girl said she was confused about Sarah’s actions and was angry about what Jake had done to her home.
She said she was scared and traumatised every time there was a knock at their door.
Her mum said the incident was distressing and that, while she had liked living where she did before the incident, she now locked the front door each time she got home.
The girl’s dad, who is a police officer for Kent Police, said the level of aggression used by the pair scared and unnerved him.
He said the defendants knew what he did for work and that he was worried his family would be attacked again.
“She’s been contacting him and has been sending them food deliveries which turn up at midnight and she also produced positive fake pregnancy tests…”
Simon Pettican, defending, told the court neither mother nor son had any previous convictions.
He said: “Jake split with her [the former girlfriend] and he ended the relationship - he didn’t want it any more.
“She’s been contacting him and has been sending them food deliveries which turn up at midnight and she also produced positive fake pregnancy tests.
“These matters were reported to the police and they said they were looking into it.
“However, the father, he is a police officer and we will say no more about that in court, but I have told my clients they can go to the family court to get a non-molestation order against them and I have given them advice about that.
“Sarah acted in an inappropriate manner.
“He works in highway maintenance and earns £400 a week and she’s on Universal Credit.”
Magistrates placed Jake, who has autism and OCD, on an 18-month community order which will see him carry out 100 hours of unpaid work and complete 25 rehabilitation sessions with probation.
He must also wear a GPS tag for six months.
Sarah was placed on a 12-month community order which will see her complete 60 hours of unpaid work.
Both were also ordered to pay the victims £1,000 in compensation and a 12-month restraining order was put in place to prevent the mother and son from contacting them or going to their home.
